Combining Like Terms
Combine (in this case) means add or subtract.
A like term is a term that's just like another term, except the coefficient doesn't have to be the same.
You're not allowed to combine unlike terms.
Examples...
- 7x + 10x, I can combine these like terms into 17x.
- 8x - 2y, I can't combine these unlike terms.
- x^2 + x, I can't combine these unlike terms.
- 4x * y, I can turn this into 4xy because it's multiplying, not adding or subtracting.
